4 reasons to read Vigilantes

As great as My Hero Academia (MHA) is there’s another story that many fans are not aware of. A spin off called My Hero Academia Vigilantes. The series follows individuals with terrible quirks who can’t get jobs as heroes. These individuals go rogue and become vigilantes doing hero work illegally.  As I’ve recently finished the manga I instantly fell in love with it. These are my 4 reasons to read Vigilantes.

1. Koichi is similar to Deku

Koichi is the protagonist of this series. He’s a college student trying to make a name for himself. While he is not quirkless like Deku he doesn’t have the greatest power.  Koichi is able to move slightly quicker than a bicycle. Pretty pathetic quirk when you compare it to Bakugo or Shoto’s power.

Without giving any major spoilers. He further develops his quirk and becomes much stronger. To the point where he can fight some of the strongest villains. This is similar to Deku who got One For All (OFA) from the #1 Hero Almight, but had to train relentlessly to master OFA. You will see Koichi put in the same amount of effort in his training.

2. Slightly more mature crowd

As mentioned earlier Koichi is a young adult in college trying to find his place in the world. Unlike Deku he initially doesn’t strive to be a hero. He wants to focus on finishing college so that he can get a good career following graduation.  Like any college student he wants to meet people, date girls and just make the most out of his youth.

This is pretty refreshing as it goes against the regular formula of high school drama. The manga perfectly shows what young adult life looks like for people in college. As a guy in his late 20s I find a lot of Koichi’s encounters and experiences relatable to my own college years.

3. Less characters & more time!

Another reason why I like this show so much is there are less characters to follow. The series primarily focuses on 3 vigilantes who take the spotlight: Knuckleduster, the Crawler (Koichi) and Pop-Step. While there are plenty of side characters but they do not offer much to the main story.

Considerably different from My Hero Academia which follows Deku attending a class of 20 students, all of whom get a considerable amount of screen time. This was the one thing i didn’t like about MHA as there were too many characters. I always got more invested in a story when there were a core set of main characters. Like Pokemon when the first season revolved around just Ash, Brock and Misty.

4. Old faces return

For those of you who love the main anime My Hero Academia many faces return in the spin-off. Since Vigilantes is a prequel, the characters are a few years younger. Aizawa is still an active hero and not a teacher just yet. While Almight hasn’t suffered from his injury and is still the #1 hero in the world. If you want to see how these heroes were before they met Deku give Vigilantes a try!
