A Summary of DCEU Decisions for New Movies

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the franchise has been unloading bad news week after week. This has left many fans concerned about the future. Here is a summary of DCEU decisions made so far for new movies and topics still up in the air.

1. Wonder Woman 3 unknown

Gal Gadot gave a mesmerizing performance in 2017 with her initial Wonder Woman film. This gave fans a strong female hero that can rival the most badass villains. Her next role in the Justice League film was also incredible.

That all changed with 1984. Hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen, completely disregarding the character development Wonder Woman had in the past films. While there were rumours that the third film is a not happening, James Gunn has dismissed such rumours.

2. Henry Cavil will not be Super Man

After five years since his last appearance in Justice League, fans were ecstatic with seeing Cavil return as the caped crusader in a post credit scene of Black Adam this past fall. This appearance opened up countless doors of possibilities for the DCEU.

However Cavil recently posted on his IG that he unfortunately will not be returning as Superman. It’s been confirmed that Gunn and Safran want to reboot the character with a younger actor. Another heart-breaking blow to fans of the DCEU and another reason to roll your eyes at James Gunn and Peter Safran. Cavil was an excellent SuperMan, and it’ll be hard for the next iteration to live up to his performance.

3. DCEU’s Batman still undecided

While Affleck’s iteration of the character set to return in the Flash and Aquaman films scheduled for next year. There has not been any confirmation on Affleck’s future with DCEU . Keaton is also set to reprise his iteration of the Batman in the upcoming Flash movie. While Pattinson’s version of the character will continue to exist in his own universe for the time being.

That’s three versions of the Batman and a lot to keep up with, leaving many fans confused on what to follow. Personally I feel that the Pattinson version of the caped crusader is best to exist in its own universe. Similar to the Dark Knight, there was nothing supernatural about The Batman film.

With so much up in the air, it will be interesting to see what the DCEU decides to do with the main timeline’s Batman (currently played by Affleck) .

4. Snydercut of the Justice League will not continue

This information isn’t new to anyone, but worth mentioning. After the Snyder cut version of the Justice League had released in 2021. Fans were excited to see a possible trilogy. However, Snyder quickly revealed in 2021 that there was no plan to create one.

This news was relevant again when Cavil confirmed he would not return as Super Man. Similarly, I am wondering about the purpose of upcoming films in 2023 about the Flash and Aquaman. Both of whom are critical characters in the Justice League film. What’s the purpose of these movies if we’re not going to expand this universe?

5. Black Adam not in the immediate DC future

Dwayne Johnson recently announced that DCEU has no plans to include Black Adam in the first phase of upcoming films. But James Gunn is open to finding innovative ways to use Black Adam down the road. The Rock thanks the fans for supporting and helping him get Black Adam a solo movie. Something he’s wanted to do for 15 years.

As somebody who watches superhero films regularly, I can honestly say that I neither love nor hate Black Adam. That post-credit scene gave me hope. But after the updates from Cavil, and Johnson that excitement is long gone.

There is the summary of the DCEU decisions made so far. There is no doubt, in my mind, that we will be getting many more updates from DCEU in the coming weeks, with 4 movies currently scheduled for next year.
