I have been watching Pokémon since it aired in Canada in 1998 and have been keeping up with the anime for 25 years. In addition, I have also watched every movie that has aired to date, and several movies from my childhood stand out. That I would recommend to any young fan who has not had a chance to watch them. These movies are old, but their stories are still amazing 20+ years later. Here are my top 4 Pokémon movies to watch. Now let’s take a look at these movies.

1. Pokémon the First Movie

1 on Top 4

The first movie was released in North America in November 1999, following the story of Mewtwo, a Pokémon clone of the legendary Mew. Mewtwo hates humans due to his upbringing and wishes to rule the world with his own army of clone Pokémon. Needing a crop of trainers with strong Pokémon, Mewtwo hosts a tournament, inviting several trainers, including our friends Ash, Brock, and Misty.

This movie sends viewers an important message: all life matters, no matter where you come from. “It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.” This quote has inspired millions of people around the world. I have watched this movie dozens of times, and I hope one day I can watch it with my own kids.

2. Pokémon 4ever

2 on Top 4 Pokémon movies to watch

The voice of the forest, Celebi, is being hunted by a trainer who wants to capture and sell the legendary Pokémon. All seems lost until a young boy named Sam appears to defend Celebi against the hunter. Celebi, who sees no way out of the predicament, transports herself and Sam 40 years into the future. Traveling to the present timeline, they meet our heroes, Ash and Pikachu. However, a new Pokémon hunter arrives with plans to capture Celebi.

This movie is visually stunning, and the animation still holds up to this day. It also sends an important message about protecting natural environments and endangered species. I had the privilege of watching this movie in theaters, and it’s one of my best childhood memories. It is definitely a movie that I would recommend for younger fans to watch if they have not seen any of Ash’s earlier adventures.

3. Pokémon Heroes

3 on Top 4 Pokémon movies to watch

Ash, Pikachu, and company arrive at Alto Mare, a town protected by the legendary Pokémon Latios and Latias. Ash and Pikachu run into the duo, making quick friends with them and their surrogate family. Unknown to everyone, though, the legendary Pokémon duo is being targeted by a couple of criminals who have their own plans.

A great movie whose scenery is inspired by the beautiful region of Venice, Italy. Another fun fact is that it’s the final film to feature the original crew of Ash, Brock, and Misty, which is why I think this movie is so memorable. Since it was the end of an era. The film perfectly shows the joys of traveling and falling in love when you are young. It has inspired me to go on my own adventures in my 20s.

4. Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

4 on Top 4 Pokémon movies to watch

Ash and his crew arrive at the Cameron Palace during a national holiday to celebrate a hero named Sir Aaron, who stopped a Pokémon war centuries ago. They encounter a Pokémon named Lucario, who was sealed away by Sir Aaron. When Pikachu is suddenly kidnapped by the Pokémon Mew. Ash and his crew team up with Lucario to go on an adventure to save Pikachu.

I would recommend this movie to anyone watching the current Pokémon Journeys anime. Because it explains why Ash has such a natural talent for sensing aura. It has always been hinted since this movie was released back in 2006 that Ash would get a Lucario. His eyes would light up whenever he battled an opponent with one. It took him 14 years, but fans were ecstatic when Riolu hatched from that egg in the Pokémon Journeys anime.

So, overall, those were my top 4 Pokémon movies that I think any fan should watch, whether old or new. I have watched each of these movies dozens of times throughout my life. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. What were your favorite Pokémon movies growing up? Let me know in the comments. If you liked this post, check out my 4 reasons to watch Suzume post.
