Shuri vs Namor

Ryan Coogler was given a tough hand after Chadwick Boseman’s unfortunate passing in 2020. Having to scrap an original script that Boseman never got the chance to read. Coogler worked on a brand new story. After watching this film with family during its second week, I was in awe by how Wakanda Forever shows grief and loss in such a realistic way.

A film like this would question Scorsese comments about ‘Marvel movies not being cinema because they don’t capture human emotion’. Here are some prime examples about how this movie mirrors real life.

Wakanda Forever shows how grief never goes away

After reappearing from the Blip, King T’challa is killed by a disease. To save her brother Shuri attempts to create a synthetic version of the heart-shaped herb but fails to put an enormous amount of guilt on her shoulders.

The slow pace used in the movie is perfect for a film about losing a loved one. Even after the 1-year time skip, we see that Wakanda is still mourning over the loss of their king and Black Panther. For anyone losing a loved one is devastating. It can be a year or a decade later, and that empty feeling will always be there.

Self-Isolation

Never being a religious person, Shuri breaks everything down to a science. Examples of this observation are the disbelief in the ancestral plane and questioning her mother, sensing the spirit of T’Challa within her. A common trait shared amongst atheists who have no religious views.

Shuri is a prime example of what happens to many people after you lose a loved one. Shutting your family and friends out of your life. Letitia Wright mentions that Shuri turns to technology to cope with losing her brother. You can clearly, see this as she distances herself from Wakanda to create weapons to protect the nation.

Carrying T’Challa’s legacy

After losing her entire family, Shuri only has one thing left worth fighting for her home Wakanda. The best way to do this was to restore the heart-shaped herb and become the next Black Panther. Though her iteration of the Black Panther is very different. Shuri chose to use morals that she learned from her immediate predecessors: T’Challa and Killmonger. Although Shuri is far from perfect, her family would be proud of her decisions and actions in this movie. Wakanda can rest safely as it now has a new protector.

A better ending?

In my opinion the best way  to challenge Scorsese comments about the MCU would be to not have a fight in this movie. As Namor did not want to fight Wakanda, but rather have the support of Wakanda when confronting the rest of the world. A peaceful conversation between Wakanda and Talacon would have left a stronger message to the audience.  Breaking the classic MCU formula and shocking critics as well.

Wakanda Forever worth watching?

Wakanda Forever is definitely a film that I would watch again when it comes to streaming services. The film has done fairly well on review sites like rotten tomatoes. Although it’s not better than its predecessor I still love the story. Angela Basset and Lettia Wright stepped up in this movie as well with Oscar worthy performances. What did you think of Wakanda Forever? Let me know down in the comments.
